In short: don’t design, donate.

mbimotmog:

Disasters aren’t like causes, causes win supporters through many means: design is one of them. Disasters destroy lives and either you can donate and you have, you can and won’t, or can’t and won’t. No poster, no matter how beautiful, is gonna change that.

Yeah. I get that. Here’s why I made mine:

  • A friend living in Tokyo mentioned to me the Japanese folklore about the Namazu and earthquakes which led to me doing some research.
  • I got obsessed with the imagery and made my own version because I had nothing else pressing to do on Saturday.
  • I didn’t want it to look like I was saying “hey, all you people dying, I made a picture!” I mean, that’s the truth of what happened, but that’s how I react to things often. I draw stuff.
  • I decided to see if anyone wanted to buy prints of the painting, and pledge to send some of the proceeds to the Red Cross, because I wanted to basically take the curse off feeling really shallow and self-absorbed that all I could do to address the disaster is make a picture. I also donated some money of my own, but I’m poor. I thought getting a few more dollars this way couldn’t hurt.

Not sure why I’m feeling defensive on the issue. I guess because I realize how pathetic any gesture I’m capable of is compared to tsunamis and nuclear meltdowns of unknown magnitude.
